Celebrity Big Brother is airing the final series before the show gets axed. The theme for BB is “Dante’s inferno – hell lies in others.”

Endermol, who produces Big Brother, has contacted Army charities to get veterans. Big Brother’s casting director sent Facebook messages to veterans and soldier amputees to invite them to appear in the next season’s Big Brother 11 show.

There are mixed reactions on having soldier amputees on Big Brother. While the first reactions may be of shock, disgust, outrage and exploitation, there may be small comforts. The nation and the world will be reminded of the casualties of war. It will send a strong anti-war message.

However, there are other far more practical ways of helping veterans. The recent Christmas donation drive spearheaded by the UK newspaper Daily Mail, collected around 400,000 Pounds for the veteran association called “Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association” (SSAFA). This shows there may not be a need to expose soldiers on TV to appeal for help. War veterans deserve their rights to privacy and human dignity.

Endermol denied they were trying to exploit the plight of wounded veterans for BB11, the last season of the show.

In 2008, 106 British soldiers died in Helmand alone. In 2008, 430 soldiers were wounded.
