Jessica Lunsford: Jessica Lunsford Act (photos)
Jessica Lunsford, 9, was abducted from her bed, molested and killed by her sex offender assailant. John Couey, a repeat sex offender, was convicted for the crimes.
Jessica Lunsford’s death inspired the creation of The Jessica Lunsford Act. This act established a mandatory sentence of 25 years in prison before a repeat sex offender can be eligible for parole. The argument was that Jessica Lunsford may have been alive if a repeat sex offender like John Couey was kept behind bars a little longer.
The Jessica Lunsford Act has been passed in 40 states. In New Jersey, the bill has been sponsored but not made the law yet. Today, the highlight is on New Jersey and the pressure on NJ to make the bill as a working Jessica Lunsford Act.
John Couey received death sentence for killing Jessica Lunsford.
